FAQs
How do I get a library card?
Library cards are free to all Massachusetts residents. Identification with a current address and a signature are required. Children 12 and under need a signature from a parent or guardian. To join, apply in person at Woods Memorial Library, located at 19 Pleasant Street, Barre, MA.
How many books and videos can I take out?
The borrowing limits for each type of material are as follows, with a combined maximum number of materials equaling 15 to be allowed to be checked out at one time:
Books and magazines = 15
New adult fiction = 5
Videos, audiobooks, music CDs, and DVDs = 5
Inter-Library Loans = 3
Periodically, we limit juvenile non-fiction subjects in case of a school report.
How long can materials be taken out?
Books, magazines and audiobooks may be checked out for 3 weeks. Videos, music CDs, and DVDs may be checked out for 1 week.
How do I renew a book or other materials borrowed from the library?
Most library materials may be renewed at the library, or by phone (978-355-2533). Inter-Library loaned materials and books on reserve may not be renewed.
What are the overdue fines for returning materials after they are due?
Woods Memorial Library does not charge overdue fines for in-house items, however, we have a "guilt jar" for overdue patrons who would like to make a donation. We do charge $.25 per day for overdue items borrowed through the Inter-Library Loan system.
Overdue notices are only sent once a month so it is possible that, upon receiving your first overdue notice, your materials may be several weeks overdue. If the item is not returned, a bill for the replacement cost is sent. Failure to return or replace lost or damaged items may result in loss of library privileges.
Where may I return materials when the library is closed?
Book drops have been provided for patron convenience in returning books and magazines. Videos, CDs, DVDs, and audiobooks should be returned to the desk, as these items are susceptible to damage by heavy books or extreme temperatures. If book drop return is absolutely necessary for these items, you must secure the cases with rubber bands and wrap in a plastic bag before placing in book drop. Be advised, we reserve the right to bill patrons for these materials if damaged after being left in the book drop.
Materials can also be returned to other libraries in Massachusetts via the courier system. Please allow at least one week's delivery time from your due date for timely renewal. Contact your local library for complete details on the courier system.
