Flood Relief

Repairs to the Children's Room cannot proceed without your help.
The Library Association does not have sufficient funds to purchase the necessary building materials.

The library is once again open with a normal schedule.
Part of the children's collection has been moved upstairs for the time being.

On March 7, 2011, there was a major flood event on the Barre Common.  As with past events, this flood poured from Gallaway Brook to the common down into the Woods Memorial Library, and caused severe damage (nine inches of water in the building).  The elevator shaft flooded, and extensive repairs are needed, including replacing the bottom 4 feet of walls.  Thankfully, the library staff were able to save almost all of the books and children's room computers.  We are working with the Sheriff's office and the MBLC, who can contribute labor and money to clean up and demolish as part of the recovery effort.

Here is what we need from you, the members of our community:

1. Monetary donations to the Barre Library Association are desperately needed to buy items like sheet rock and cement board, paint, and to cover costs associated with the elevator. To help, you can send your checks made out to the Barre Library Association to:

Barre Library Association
P.O. Box 731
Barre, MA 01005

Or you can use the donation link at the top of this page to donate using your credit card.

To date we estimate the cost of clean up and repairs to be approximately $125,000 and have received an emergency grant of $25,000 from the state.

2. If you want to help out with the repairs, or can volunteer to provide food to the workers, please contact Ann Meilus at (978) 355 2289.

Thank you so much for your support.
