On March 7, 2011, there was a major flood event on the Barre Common.  As with past floods, this flood poured from Dick's Brook, to the common and down into the Woods Memorial Library.  This event caused severe damage (nine inches of water in the building).  Thankfully, the library staff was able to save almost all of the books and children's room computers.

The town completed drainage improvements on the common, and the State has completed a replacement of the Dick's Brook culvert system in 2013.  We are quite confident that this type of flooding will not reoccur.

In the spring of 2013, the Library Association applied for and was given a grant by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners for the repair of the Children’s level.  With the assistance of Senator Brewer’s Office, we received the grant as part of the MBLC’s “Loss of a Major Service Area”.  (Barre was the first town to receive such a grant!)

Now confident that the flooding is part of our past, we have started the renovation of the Children’s Level.  Over the past few weeks, we received help from the Worcester Sheriff’s Office.  Inmates from the Community Service Office worked to repair the sheetrock, plastering, and painting of the whole area.  A few remaining tasks still need to be completed, but it is expected that this area should once again be open in July 2014.   We thank the Sheriff’s Office for their excellent work.

However, we still need community support in completing the final work in the Children’s level.  If you are interested in making a contribution, you can send your checks made out to the Barre Library Association to:
